Asuncion has many tourist attractions. It is also a city with great historical and cultural interest where the architecture from another century blends with modernity. Where to Sleep in Asuncion? Why Not in the Historic Center?
As the most populous city in Paraguay, Asuncion, particularly the historic center, is an excellent base or place to sleep during your stay. Founded in 1537, it is home to beautiful monuments to visit as well as a multitude of shops and conveniences to ensure the comfort of your stay
If you are accustomed to reading my articles, then you know that historic centers are generally lively, dynamic, and central places. In Asuncion's case, the general atmosphere is relatively calm with a really pleasant lifestyle thanks to the warm local population.
But what to do in Asuncion? Well, you could start by admiring Plaza Uruguaya, an iconic park in the city with playgrounds, benches, walkways, and lush vegetation. It is also a historic site that offers a view of landmarks like the old railway station.
Not far from there stands the magnificent Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a Catholic church built in 1845 that is definitely worth a visit. It has a stunning white façade. In front of it lies a lovely large square where you can take time to admire the monument's architecture.
For swimming and relaxation, the beach of Asuncion Bay is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. It's a nice place to sunbathe and eat nearby!
By choosing the historic center to stay in Asuncion, you are sure to find accommodation suited to your budget. The capital is full of remarkable establishments of excellent quality at unbeatable prices, which will be a real advantage for you

Villa Morra, a More Peaceful Historic and Central Neighborhood
If you are looking for a quieter neighborhood to stay in Asuncion, Villa Morra is one of the most pleasant areas. Located northeast of the city center, it is named after Francisco Mora, who was not only a doctor but also a visionary entrepreneur who founded the neighborhood in 1888
This neighborhood enjoys a unique and privileged location! Indeed, it is situated between the historic center and the international airport of Asuncion, making it a highly sought-after neighborhood for tourists. You will be about 5 kilometers from the city center, near the beach of the bay and the river
Largely residential, the Villa Morra neighborhood is a nice place for shopping ️ The most popular spots are shopping malls very frequented by locals: Paseo Carmelitas, Paseo Lilo, Paseo Mangoré, and the Food Park market. For the latter, you will find both local specialties and pizzas, hamburgers, tacos, and other delicious street food
Speaking of food, make sure to eat at least once at a churrascaria! These are restaurants originating from Brazil and Portugal that exclusively serve grilled meat cooked over wood fire with local specialties as sides.
In terms of accommodation, it is not impossible that the best establishments are quickly fully booked in this area. Villa Morra enjoys a location that is both central and close to the airport, which naturally attracts many travelers looking for a compromise. However, the price ranges are quite varied here!
Where to Stay in Villa Morra, Asuncion?

Las Carmelitas, Ideal for Shopping in Asuncion
Bordered by Parque de la Salud and Shopping del Sol, the Las Carmelitas neighborhood is a place to consider if you love shopping. It is also called Las Lomas and is located on top of a hill that houses various shops, while the lower area is more residential.
For sleeping near the airport, Las Carmelitas is a good base. In addition to establishments offering shuttle transfers, many bus lines will take you to the airport. Of course, I mention that these same bus lines also allow you to reach the historic center of Asuncion
Las Carmelitas is not the most touristy area of the city. But if you prefer to stay a bit more on the outskirts, then check out the Museo del Barro. It started as a private collection that became permanent with various contemporary works and pieces from the pre-Columbian era.
In addition to being able to get good deals in the nearby shopping malls, the prices of accommodations in the Las Carmelitas area are also quite low. If you are looking for a hotel that is more or less high-end, there are some, but very few. However, there is an interesting selection of guesthouses and vacation rental apartments.
Where to Stay in Asuncion? In Las Carmelitas Neighborhood?

Near Asuncion Airport, for a Convenient Stay
Out of the way, Silvio Pettirossi Airport is located in the city of Luque. It is an interesting stop if you are passing through Asuncion for a night or two, but beyond that, it's better to get closer to the historic center. It is also suitable for people needing to stay overnight due to an early morning flight
This is a well-connected international airport serving Ciudad del Este and Encarnacion, two other major cities in Paraguay. Unsurprisingly, it serves a wide range of countries from South America and a few destinations in Spain! When it comes to accommodation, you will surely find something!
If you prefer to stay closest to the airport, you have two options: sleep in one of the hotels located a few hundred meters from the airport or stay in Luque. However, expect to see fairly high prices, as this type of location is very sought after by tourists, hence more expensive.
To stay near the airport while saving a little money, it would be more interesting to move a little further away. The prices are a bit more accessible and you will have a better chance of encountering establishments offering apart-hotels, which are much cheaper in comparison.
Where to Stay in Asuncion? Near Silvio Pettirossi Airport of course
Sol de Luque Casa-hotel is located less than 2 kilometers from the airport, offering pleasant and comfortable rooms. Starting at €51 per night, you will enjoy a complete and varied breakfast, an outdoor pool, and even a barbecue. Free parking is available, and if needed, you can use the airport shuttle service.
Beulah Hotel Boutique is located north of the Las Lomas neighborhood, halfway between the historic center and Silvio Pettirossi Airport (7 km). This establishment has a family atmosphere and offers comfortable rooms starting at €66 per night with breakfast. The staff on site is very available and helpful.
Paramanta Lifestyle Hotel is located just a 10-minute drive from the airport and offers lovely comfortable rooms. It is an excellent place to remember as it is accessible from €58 per night, with breakfast included. Its proximity to shopping areas and the center is a real plus!
How to Get to Asuncion?
The most efficient and fastest mode of transport to Paraguay is by plane ✈️ In the case of Asuncion, it is entirely possible to find direct flights from New York, Los Angeles, and Miami with the airline LATAM Airlines, as well as Air France (New York) and Air Europa (New York).
When searching for flights, I strongly recommend comparing prices online using Ulysse, our partner. This way, you can ensure you find the cheapest flight
What Season to Visit Asuncion?
Paraguay has a tropical climate with reversed seasons. The local winter period, between May and September, is, in my opinion, the best time to discover Paraguay. I recommend prioritizing the months of July, August, and September, when the rainfall rate is the lowest
During the winter season, you will enjoy pleasant temperatures ranging from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. These rise starting in October, exceeding 30 degrees, so ideally, I suggest targeting September. The summer season in Paraguay, from October to April, is not recommended as it records heavy rains ☔️
Now that you know where to sleep in Asuncion, I suggest planning as many activities, visits, and excursions as possible. I will also try to provide you with an article about what to do in Asuncion as soon as possible! But in the meantime, if you have the benefit of a long stay to discover several countries on the continent, also check out where to stay in Buenos Aires and where to stay in Rio de Janeiro
