Where to Stay in Gozo?
Often considered the little sister of Malta, the island of Gozo is known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and a culture heavily influenced by Italians, British, and the Eastern world. From beautiful sandy beaches to turquoise bays, caves, and hills, there's plenty to explore... If you've decided to spend a few days there and are looking for a place to stay in Gozo, you're in the right place!
Unlike the island of Malta, Gozo is less crowded with tourists and is home to beautiful authentic villages! For the most part, they offer excellent options whether in terms of budget or location. I will therefore suggest the best towns to stay in Gozo along with all my favorite addresses
How to Find Accommodation in Gozo?
To ensure you find accommodation for your stay in Gozo, you should start as early as possible and have a flexible budget to have enough options! Knowing the type of lodging you are looking for is also a good starting point to find that hidden gem With its 70 km² area, Gozo is a small island, so the geographical location isn't a top priority!
Unlike Malta, the island of Gozo is less touristy, hence not as crowded. That's why you won't have much difficulty finding a place to stay. With options ranging from hotel rooms, hostels, farms, or rental houses, there's something for every taste and desire! But don't wait too long to book, or you may have limited choices...
However, no matter where you choose to stay in Gozo, you won't have much trouble getting around the island! That's why I encourage you to rent a car in Malta to make exploring easier, even by ferry to discover the other islands of the Maltese archipelago In the following sections of this post, I invite you to discover the best towns to stay in Gozo along with my selection of a few great hotel addresses!
My ❤️ Favorite Places to Stay in Gozo!
In Victoria, the capital, The Duke Boutique Hotel is an excellent establishment where you will stay in modern, spacious, and elegant rooms starting from €94 per night for a double room, including traditional breakfast.
For a beachfront setting, consider St. Patrick's Hotel in Xlendi. For a spacious double room with a view of the bay, expect a minimum of €75 per night. You will also enjoy a restaurant, a bar, and free parking.
In the town of Nadur, you can stay at The Lyndee House, a charming rustic guesthouse with cozy and authentic double rooms available from €77 per night, breakfast included.
Where to Stay in Gozo? Victoria (Ir-Rabat), the Capital of the Island!
Among the best options for a stay in Gozo, Victoria or Ir-Rabat, the capital, enjoys a very central location. Commonly referred to as Città Victoria to avoid confusion with the city of Rabat in Malta, its name pays homage to Queen Victoria when the archipelago was still under British rule, a designation granted in 1887 by the government.
Victoria stands out for the beauty of its old town, a medieval city surrounded by fortified walls within which lies the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Dar Storika tal-Gran Kastell folk and historical museum. You can also visit the Gozo Archaeological Museum showcasing prehistoric sculptures and admire the walls of the old prison, covered with engravings made by prisoners.
Without a doubt, staying in Victoria, especially in the center, will give you access to all amenities and shops, as well as Independence Square, which is the nerve center of the capital! Restaurants, cafes, bars, artisan shops, and even markets are located there to experience the local ambiance. Another significant advantage is that you'll be staying near the bus station to explore the entire island!
Even though the island of Gozo has many accommodation options, the capital can quickly see its establishments fully booked! That's why I encourage you to prioritize vacation rentals that are plentiful and accessible to all budgets
Where to Stay in Victoria / Ir-Rabat?
The Duke Boutique Hotel is very well located in the center of Victoria. It offers nice modern and comfortable double rooms starting from €94 per night, with breakfast included. The establishment has a restaurant, a bar, as well as an airport shuttle service, and you will be welcomed by a smiling staff!
The Capital Heights Room is an interesting accommodation for limited budgets. For €41 per night, you will enjoy a double room in a pleasant guesthouse. The room has a small fridge and some amenities for your comfort. You'll be just 750 meters from the medieval citadel.
Xlendi, for Enjoying the Bay and Nightlife
Located on the west coast of Gozo, Xlendi is a charming seaside village that shines due to its beautiful bay made of crystal-clear waters! This spot is one of the most popular for scuba diving in Malta and is an excellent retreat for relaxing on the sand while admiring the wild landscapes... If that's what you're looking for in your vacation, then sleeping in Xlendi is definitely where you need to be!
Xlendi might not be the most touristy town of the Maltese archipelago, but it is close to the Caroline Cave and the Sanap cliffs which are must-see sites. You can also admire the oldest watchtower in Gozo, the Xlendi Tower, built to protect the island from pirates. When the sun sets, enjoy the vibrant nightlife and dance in one of the many clubs in Xlendi
By staying here, you won't be far from Victoria, the capital. However, it is advisable to book as soon as possible because accommodation options are limited and hotels fill up quickly. In terms of budget, prices are generally reasonable and affordable, but don't waste too much time.
Where to Stay in Xlendi?
The Hotel San Andrea is a charming 3-star establishment located on the seafront promenade facing Xlendi bay. It offers nice comfortable rooms, some even providing a beautiful view of the Mediterranean! A restaurant, bar, and free parking are available. For a night in a double room in this hotel, expect to pay around €83, with breakfast included.
Rooms at St. Patrick's Hotel start from €75 per night, including breakfast. The establishment has large comfortable rooms that are carefully decorated, a restaurant with a terrace and sea view, and is very well located across from the bay of Xlendi The staff is very friendly and approachable. You will be close to all water activities and the best restaurants in the village.
Marsalforn, an Authentic and Picturesque Seaside Resort
If you don't have a favorite yet, you might want to consider the north of Gozo, which is home to the village of Marsalforn, an ancient port that attracts many travelers during the summer in Malta! It's a great base to enjoy entertainment, water sports, and even a fair if you choose high season. In low season, however, Marsalforn is relatively calm and relaxed
Here, you won't see big tourist attractions, but you will enjoy swimming moments and relaxation in the translucent waters as well as the shops available on site. I also suggest taking a tour to see the salt pans, naturally carved into the rock. The viewpoints are spectacular, including if you visit Ramla beach for its natural red sand stretch! ️
Likewise, if you're considering a stay in Marsalforn, you won't be very far from Victoria. A bus line can take you to the capital and other towns if you don't have a rental car. Much like in many villages in Gozo, finding affordable accommodation here won't be very complicated, but don't wait until the last moment to book, especially if you decide to visit Malta in summer
Where to Stay in Marsalforn?
The Electra Guesthouse is an excellent address for solo travelers on a budget! This guesthouse enjoys a superb location facing the bay and offers simple rooms at €36 per night with breakfast included! A restaurant is available on site and you'll be just 2 minutes walk from the Marsalforn waterfront.
The Lantern Stay is located less than 200 meters from the Marsalforn beach and offers spacious, carefully decorated rooms starting at €64 per night in a double room, with breakfast included. This guesthouse is near restaurants, shops, diving centers, and a bus stop just a few minutes away.
Nadur, for an Authentic and Peaceful Stay
In the eastern part of the island of Gozo is Nadur, a charming town that will undoubtedly suit travelers looking for a quieter and less touristy setting.
Nadur is the second-largest town in Gozo, and unlike the other towns reviewed in this article, its ambiance is residential. It is also called Amerikani since a large number of Maltese and Americans returning from the United States chose to settle in Nadur in the past. This feature gives the town of Nadur a very American vibe along with its pretty bays with turquoise waters.
In this case, there are no major attractions to discover, just an immersion into the life of locals! Walks through the streets, fish markets, and other fresh produce are to be expected on the agenda... Also, enjoy the beauty of the bay and the surroundings.
If staying in Nadur interests you, I encourage you to book as quickly as possible. There are many lovely and good establishments available, but it's good to have a choice! In terms of price, they are accessible to everyone.
Where to Stay in Nadur?
The LYNDEE HOUSE is a stunning Bed & Breakfast that offers spacious and warm rooms in a charming building. Accessible from €77 per night with breakfast, you will enjoy a well-exposed terrace and a warm and attentive welcome
Tal-Bir Farmhouse is a beautiful property featuring an outdoor pool, garden, and all necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The rooms available are comfortable and have private bathrooms. Expect to pay from €41 per night in a double room.
And that's all from me! Now that you know where to stay in Gozo, I suggest you continue organizing your trip by discovering the must-do activities if you want to visit Malta! From visiting villages, boat trips to admire the cliffs, or discovering beaches, the Maltese archipelago has plenty of offers!
