Switzerland may be small in size, but it is home to around 1,500 lakes, representing 6% of Europe's freshwater resources These natural sites are major tourist attractions that make Switzerland a destination for nature lovers, even though it's impossible to see them all in one trip!

Many activities are possible around and on these Swiss lakes: hiking, swimming, water sports, etc. Often, the shores of the largest lakes are developed for travelers who flock during the summer months, from June to October ☀️ Only the reservoir lakes are off-limits for swimming. In winter, Swiss lakes are also worth a visit for the magical landscape they offer between frost and snow-capped peaks ️

There's one last tip to know: the lakes in German-speaking Switzerland are recognizable by their names, always accompanied by the suffix 'see' >>.

If you're looking for some unusual experiences during your trip to Switzerland, I highly recommend trying at least once the Swiss specialties and the attractions that come with them For example, you could visit a chocolate museum or a cheese factory! All of this set against spectacular backdrops of snowy peaks, lakes, and picturesque towns! And of course, remember to book your activities in advance

Lake Bleu d'Arolla

Lake Bleu d'Arolla, located in the Valais Canton at an altitude of 2,000 meters, is often considered the most beautiful lake in Switzerland What earns it this honor is its light blue color created by the presence of algae and glacial clay. The lake is also surrounded by a dense forest of larch and Arolla pines for an even more remarkable backdrop

The favorite activity at Lake Bleu d'Arolla is hiking There are various trails of different levels, but they remain very accessible even for beginners. The simplest trail is about 3 km long with a positive elevation gain of 268 m. At the end of it, you'll certainly deserve a short break to picnic by the lake on one of the provided tables. Swimming is possible, but given the altitude of Lake Bleu d'Arolla, you must prepare for chilly waters even in the height of summer

To access it, I recommend parking at the La Gouille location, which is a 40-minute walk from the lake ️

Most Beautiful Lakes in Switzerland: Lake Cauma

Lake Cauma is another must-see mountain lake located in the Grisons Canton at an altitude of 997 meters. Once again, it's the color of the water that explains its popularity! It stands out with its clear turquoise waters, worthy of a postcard, and its peaceful atmosphere ☺️ And in the middle of the lake, you'll even find a small wooded island.

Very family-friendly, Lake Cauma is an excellent spot for a short and easy 30-minute walk around the lake. It is particularly a swimming hotspot during the summer season since its water comes from underground hot springs. Unlike the cool waters of other mountain lakes, Lake Cauma often reaches temperatures of 24 degrees Celsius in mid-summer ️ Note that a part of the lake is private and therefore subject to fees. You will need to pay 14 CHF (approximately 15 €) to enjoy the picnic areas, sun loungers, and playgrounds

From the parking area, it takes about thirty minutes to reach the lake, unless you take the free funicular

In the heart of the Grisons Canton, in the village of Savognin, the Alpina hotel-restaurant is an excellent base to see the stunning Lake Cauma and partake in many mountain activities like hiking and skiing in winter. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and you can even dine in one of the two restaurants on-site. Expect to pay starting from 134 € for overnight stays

Crestasee

Crestasee is also located in the Grisons Canton, downhill from Lake Cauma, at 844 meters above sea level, in the village of Flims. Even though they are close, these lakes are very different, and Crestasee is much smaller, offering a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere

It is also a very accessible lake for a small walk, taking about fifteen minutes to reach the lake from the paid parking area and another 20 to 30 minutes to make the full tour. You will stroll through a dense forest that offers vibrant colors in the autumn

There is also a dock on the lake that invites you to jump into the waters of Crestasee, which are at a pleasant temperature throughout the summer season. There is even a ladder to make swimming accessible for everyone

Most Beautiful Lakes in Switzerland: Blausee

Blausee

Located in the Bern Canton, Blausee should not be confused with Lake Bleu d'Arolla, as its name literally translates to 'Blue Lake.' It is a true natural treasure that earns its reputation from the purity of its bright blue water and enchanting atmosphere, even though it is one of the smallest lakes in Switzerland!

It's an ideal spot for a romantic walk of about twenty minutes (starting from the parking lot plus a complete tour of Blausee) and for picnicking. The shores of the lake are well developed, with some hotels, restaurants, and activity providers, for instance, to book a boat ride on the lake If you're seeking a moment of calm in nature, you might want to think twice, as everything is designed to attract tourists and families here.

However, entry is fee-based, which contributes to preserving the site's beauty... But considering the fees for such a small lake, I am not so sure:

Prices increase even more during the summer season, so be sure to check the official Blausee website before planning a visit

  • Monday to Friday: 9 CHF (10 €)
  • Weekend: 13 CHF (14 €)
  • Weekend after 5 PM: 11 CHF (12 €)

Lake Oeschinen

Located near Kandersteg in the Bern Canton, Lake Oeschinen or 'Oeschinensee' is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers a magical setting surrounded by peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in height, while it itself rises to an altitude of 1,578 meters.

The spot is accessible by cable car, followed by a short walk From there, you can embark on one of the most beautiful hikes in Switzerland, the panoramic loop of 7 km to Oberbärgli, offering the best view of Oeschinensee You can also extend this hike into a 14 km tour if you choose to walk from the paid parking area (8 CHF) rather than taking the cable car. There are plenty of other things to do around Lake Oeschinen: a picnic or barbecue on the shores of the lake, a boat tour, and you can also fish or swim in the relatively cool waters. There is even a hotel for overnight stays

Most Beautiful Lakes in Switzerland: Lake Geneva

It is impossible to talk about the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland without mentioning Lake Geneva, also known as Lac Léman! Shared between Switzerland and France, this vast lake stretches nearly 73 km long, making it one of the largest in Western Europe. On the Swiss side, cities like Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux offer privileged access to its shores

Stroll along the floral quays of Montreux, enjoy one of the many cruises on Lake Geneva that go all the way to Château de Chillon, or take advantage of the developed beaches for swimming in the summer Lake Geneva is also renowned for its spectacular sunsets, particularly from the Lavaux region, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lake Brienz

Located in the Bern Canton, Lake Brienz also attracts many tourists due to its deep blue waters! Stretching 14 kilometers long, it is surrounded by imposing mountains and charming villages like Brienz, Interlaken, and Iseltwald.

Here, you can board a historic steam boat, explore the Giessbach waterfalls, or simply relax by the water to take in the view. The lake is also an ideal spot for kayaking or jet boating with minimal waves thanks to its narrow shape. If you are looking for paradise lakes in Switzerland, Lake Brienz truly checks all the boxes: pristine nature, tranquility, and postcard-perfect landscapes guaranteed!

Lake Zurich

In the heart of the city, Lake Zurich offers a perfect balance if you wish to enjoy nature while being close to the shops and activities of the city center

Biking along the quays, swimming in the Badi, and taking boat cruises are on the agenda if you are unsure about what to do in Zurich. During spring and summer, many Zurich residents and tourists come to picnic and enjoy the numerous lakeside attractions

Lake Neuchâtel

Lake Neuchâtel is a classic if you're looking for the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland! It is the largest lake entirely located in Swiss territory, measuring 38.3 kilometers long, and is perfect for swimming, kitesurfing, and boat rides.

The old town of Neuchâtel is also full of charm! The beach at Yverdon-les-Bains is highly popular during the summer. Be sure to also discover the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve on the south bank of the lake, as it's a true gem for observing endemic wildlife

Lake Gelmer

If you are a fan of turquoise waters and thrilling experiences, then Lake Gelmer is for you! Located in the Bern Canton, this artificial lake at an altitude of 1,850 meters is accessible via the Gelmerbahn funicular, which is one of the steepest in the world!

Even though it's an artificial lake, its wild setting and the intensity of its colors make it one of the most beautiful natural spots in Switzerland. Once you are up there, a short and easy hike allows you to walk around the lake while sharing breathtaking views. However, be cautious because even in summer, the water is icy! Swimming is only for the bravest...

Most Beautiful Lakes in Switzerland: Lake Morat

Smaller than Neuchâtel or Geneva, Lake Morat at the foot of Mount Vully, between the cantons of Fribourg and Vaud, is very charming.

It is surrounded by vineyards and hills where you can bike, and you can also tour Lake Morat by boat. The old town has well-preserved ramparts worth a visit. In summer, the lake's water can reach up to 24 degrees, making it one of the best Swiss lakes for swimming. If you're looking for a friendly, less touristy destination full of authenticity, Lake Morat will meet your expectations
