What to do in Murano?

Murano Island is a must-visit during a stay in Venice! Located in the heart of the lagoon, it is world-renowned for its ancestral craft in glassmaking and glass blowing. Every year, thousands of visitors come to admire the talent of the artisans at work and leave with magnificent glass objects as souvenirs.

But Murano is not just about its glass workshops: the island is also full of charm, culture, and places to explore. In this article, I will take you through the 10 best activities to do in Murano, for a complete and authentic experience

1. Visit the Murano Cathedral

Upon arriving in Murano from Venice, one of the first monuments to see is the Murano Cathedral, featuring Gothic architecture that reveals the full splendor of the Republic of Venice! Built in the 7th century, it showcases a beautiful silhouette adorned with intricate details and boasts a remarkable façade. As a piece of history, the Murano Cathedral underwent significant transformations during the 9th and 12th centuries, but it still retains its charm.

The interior of the building, also known as >, features a lovely ceiling, elegant vaults, and stunning Byzantine mosaics. You can glimpse a representation of the Virgin Mary in prayer, as well as the relics of San Donato behind the altar. This cathedral is an excellent starting point if you decide to visit Murano, as it's the first one you will see

Admission is free.

2. Discover the Glass Museum

It's impossible to visit the island of Murano without stopping by the Glass Museum, a true institution. It is one of the most popular museums in the Venice area. As you can imagine, this museum dedicated to the art of glass showcases Murano's long tradition of glassmaking, revealing its artisanal techniques as well as the ingenuity of Venetian master glassmakers over the centuries

The Murano Glass Museum consists of nine exhibition halls presenting a beautiful collection of works that highlight the craftsmanship of glass artisans and Murano's relationship with the main lagoon of Venice. According to several archives, glass workshops were initially located in Venice itself before being moved to Murano due to devastating fires that occurred in 976 and 1106, which also ravaged the Doge's Palace.

Tickets for the Murano Glass Museum should be reserved online, especially if you visit Venice in the height of summer!

3. Tour the Artisan Glass Workshops

When visiting Murano, I recommend exploring the streets in search of traditional glass workshops. Some studios open their doors to the public to showcase their art, especially for a unique glass blowing demonstration. Please understand that glassmaking is an industry that significantly contributes to the economy of Venice, enabling many residents to make a living

Among the most popular artisanal glass workshops in Murano, the following addresses should not be missed:

  • Massimiliano Schiavon Art Team will welcome you with warmth and friendliness before taking you on a tour of their most beautiful glass collections. These are renowned for their uniqueness, featuring colorful pieces with astonishing and very creative shapes. This workshop is definitely worth a visit
  • The second workshop to visit is that of Bruno Fusato Signoretti, one of the most renowned glassmakers in Venice and Murano. Following his passing in 2014, the workshop is now maintained by his daughters, who are pleased to show you the glassmaking shop and production workshop

4. Participate in a Glassblowing Workshop

Still in the same spirit, you can also participate in a glassblowing workshop in Murano! This is an exceptional and unmissable activity! This will allow you to discover this tradition in the most engaging and immersive way. Participants are guided by a professional glassmaker who will teach the basic techniques, but be sure not to reproduce them at home

From the very start, you will be fascinated by the glass-making process. It begins with dipping a rod into a hot crucible, followed by capturing a drop of incandescent glass. That's when the magic happens, as each breath synchronizes the manipulation of the glass, creating a unique shape...

The glassblowing workshop in Murano that I recommend takes place at the Gino Mazzuccato glass factory, a small family-run shop where you will definitely have a pleasant time

5. Stroll on the Grand Canal of Murano

After these enriching experiences, take in the beauty of Murano by enjoying a boat ride on the banks of Murano's canal. Yes, even Murano Island has its main canal, making it the perfect opportunity to discover its typical architecture. It's evident that these cruises on the Murano canal are less popular than boat rides on the Grand Canal of Venice, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't book your spot in advance during the summer

Often, these tourist cruises also include stops at Burano and Torcello, two other major islands in the Venice lagoon, as well as a glass-blowing demonstration. It's a great opportunity to combine two experiences in one day during your stay in Venice!

Burano is famous for its brightly painted fishermen's houses! Torcello is quieter than its neighbors but remains a remarkable historical site. You can visit ruins, the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its ancient mosaics, and its bell tower, as well as the Ponte del Diavolo!

6. Palazzo da Mula and its Gothic Architecture

Before returning to Venice or boarding a ferry to Burano, another island in the lagoon, for example, I recommend stopping by Palazzo da Mula, a stunning historical building with Gothic architecture combining typically Venetian elements. You can admire its façade adorned with tiles, bricks, and especially Istrian stone.

This simply magnificent palace from the outside is the seat of the Municipality of Venice-Murano-Burano, housing the register office's offices. Various cultural activities and events are organized on the ground floor, so feel free to inquire about the official site of the Centro della Civiltà Lagunare

7. Visit the Beautiful Churches of the Lagoon

As you explore Murano on foot, you will undoubtedly come across beautiful buildings such as charming and authentic churches. Some are worth discovering, notably Santa Maria degli Angeli, whose origins date back to 1188 before being consecrated in 1529 following a reconstruction. This church was made famous by a papal bull initiating its union with the branch of Santa Maria di Piave di Lovadina.

The second church that should absolutely be visited in Murano is San Pietro Martire, located in the center of Murano near the bridge of the same name. This church belonged to the Dominicans for a long time before they were expelled by the French occupation of Napoleon's armies. This religious building features beautiful Gothic architecture and is one of the most emblematic monuments of Murano

8. Admire the Colonnades of Murano

More monuments await you if you're unsure of what to do in Murano! During your visit, don't forget to stop by the historical colonnades that are an integral part of the island:

  • The Roman Column of Murano is located at the landing stage when you arrive by ferry. So before venturing into the center, take the time to admire this leaning monument! It served as a pedestal for the statue of Domenico Contarini, the 30th Doge of Venice, from one of the oldest families in the city!
  • As for the Column of the Call, it was simply a gathering place when the messenger would regularly recite the ordinances conveyed by the Doge or the Venetian authorities of the time. The column features the Lion of Saint Mark, not far from the Ponte di Mezzo.

9. Admire the Murano Lighthouse

Located at the southern tip of the island, the Murano Lighthouse (Faro di Murano) is one of the most emblematic landmarks of the lagoon. Erected in the 19th century from white stone, it stands proudly facing the water and continues to guide vessels with its active beam of light. Even though it is not open for visits, it is a pleasant spot to take a break by the water, watch the vaporettos come and go, or take a few photos with the Venetian lagoon in the background.

From the lighthouse, you can easily board a boat to Burano, the neighboring island known for its colorful houses and village atmosphere. A great idea for a stroll if you wish to continue exploring the islands of the lagoon!

10. Taste Italian Cuisine

It's impossible to pass through Murano without making a delicious stop! The island, although quieter than Venice, is full of small restaurants, osterie, and trattorie where you can savor the richness of Italian cuisine. On the menu: fresh pasta, seafood risottos, grilled fish right out of the lagoon, or cicchetti, these small Venetian tapas perfect for sharing during aperitif with a glass of Spritz or Prosecco

Don't hesitate to try the local specialties like spaghetti alle vongole (with clams), cuttlefish in ink, or baccalà mantecato, a creamy cod typical of the Veneto region. And to finish on a sweet note, treat yourself to a homemade tiramisu or artisanal ice cream while strolling along the canals.

Dining in Murano is also about taking the time to appreciate the Italian way of life, in a more peaceful setting than neighboring Venice... all with a view of the water, of course!

Can you stay on Murano Island?

Although accommodations are few in Murano, the few available options come with very high prices. If you have a moderate or tight budget, it's best to stay on the main lagoon of Venice, where options are more generous, even in terms of pricing. On the other hand, if you have the budget to spend one or two nights in Murano, here are a few accommodations that I can only recommend

Hotel Conterie is located right next to the Murano Museo vaporetto stop, making it very easy to access. You will also be close to all the points of interest in the lagoon and enjoy a comfortable night's stay starting from €97.

NH Collection Murano Villa couldn't be better placed, as it is right next to the Murano Glass Museum. It offers stylish and comfortable rooms, a luxurious atmosphere found throughout the establishment, including a restaurant, a bar, and even a wellness center. For one night, plan to start from €221.

How to get to Murano?

Several options are available to you, including the boat excursions I mentioned in the article. Many tours offer combined visits including Murano, Burano, and Torcello, which is very economical!

But that's not the only option since the vaporetto, a specific type of boat that is part of the Venice transport company (ACTV), is one of the cheapest ways to visit the neighboring islands. This service is offered by ACTV with departures every 20 to 30 minutes from Ferroviaria C station.

To save money, you can get what's called a Vaporetto Pass to move freely through the canals of Venice for a duration of 75 minutes, 1, 2, 3, or 7 days starting from €12; as with many tourist cards, prices scale down the longer the validity period is
