Is it really useful to take binoculars on trips? And how do you make the right choice? What criteria should you pay attention to?

During our trip to Jordan, I had the chance to test the Swarovski Optics Pocket CL 10X25 binoculars. Here are my impressions and tips for choosing the right travel binoculars.

First Impressions

I don't know what surprised me more the first time I held them: their minimalist size or their weight, which was heavier than I expected (350 g) given their size?

It took me a few tries to understand that there are > for the eyes. I must admit, it didn't even occur to me to read the manual for binoculars!

Once those covers were in place, I enjoyed: these binoculars have many remarkable advantages from the very first seconds:

  • the image is sharp, both in the center and at the edges of the lens;
  • there is no color loss;
  • and the image is bright, the lenses even seem to slightly enhance the perceived light!

Usage

I primarily used the binoculars while visiting the archaeological site of Petra. This allowed me to see certain details at the Treasury of Petra that I could not see with the naked eye. I was also able to observe some beautiful birds.

The focal length of the Swarovski Optics Pocket CL binoculars is fixed: it has a 10x zoom. So, it is not possible to locate an object with a smaller zoom or to gradually approach the target. This can be limiting when trying to aim at a bird in flight, especially when the sky is uniform: it is challenging to get your bearings.

Of course, due to the weight and size, it would not have been possible to have a set of movable lenses. At least, not with this image quality. Let's say that I would recommend using these binoculars to observe fixed targets (monuments, landscapes, nature...) rather than fast-moving small animals.

And what about a camera?

It's difficult not to compare them to a camera with a lens that allows for a similar zoom. The advantages of such a device are obvious: zoom capabilities, autofocus, and the ability to capture the moment in viewfinder or on screen. But again, for similar image quality, you need to consider weight, bulkiness, and a significantly higher total price.

Conclusion

The Swarovski Optics Pocket CL 10X25 binoculars live up to their promises. They provide quality images for a relatively reduced weight and bulk. However, they are not suitable for all uses.

I haven't mentioned the price. Indeed, $750 might seem expensive, but one must realize we are talking about high-end quality; thus, the price-to-quality ratio seems quite reasonable to me.
