What to Do in Santorini?

Santorini, one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, is a dream destination for lovers of breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, black sand beaches, and stunning sunsets. Located in the Cyclades, it is famous for its whitewashed houses perched on steep cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. This Greek island provides a multitude of activities for all tastes, ranging from romantic strolls to boat excursions and visits to historical sites.

Fira is one of the most popular spots in Santorini, and it's easy to see why. This picturesque town is located on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, offering splendid views of the crystal clear waters and the island's traditional white houses.

As you wander through the narrow streets of Fira, you'll discover a myriad of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars for every taste and budget. It's also here that you can visit many museums and historical sites, including the Archaeological Museum of Thera. If you're looking to explore Santorini's culture and history, Fira is a must-visit

To get around the town, you can walk, but I recommend renting a car or booking excursions to explore the surrounding areas.

Santorini is known for its charming traditional villages, such as Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Emporio. Each of these villages has its unique charm, with narrow streets, white houses, and blue-domed churches. You can easily spend a day exploring these villages, discovering artisan shops and local taverns.

Strolling through Oia is also one of the must-do activities when visiting Santorini. This small village located on the heights of the island is renowned for its spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. As you wander through the streets of this village, you will be transported to a world of beauty and poetry. You'll also find many bars and restaurants with breathtaking views, perfect for enjoying a drink or meal while admiring the landscape. During my visit to Santorini, I was lucky enough to discover the Oia Castle, a true gem of this picturesque village!

During a trip to Santorini, exploring the beaches is a must. Among the most popular is Perissa Beach, known for its black sand, which I discovered during my last trip. Located on the eastern coast of the island, this beach is the perfect place to relax, swim, or engage in water sports. The black sand is so different from what we usually see on beaches, adding a unique dimension to swimming

The crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea are also perfect for swimming or engaging in aquatic activities, such as jet skiing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, or scuba diving. Considered by many as the most beautiful beach in Santorini, it is very touristy, and the festive atmosphere of Perissa Beach is palpable.

And although Santorini is famous for its black sand beaches, including Vlychada, there are also red sand beaches to explore, like Kokkini Paralia and Red Beach, which offer a unique and fascinating experience.

The volcano of Santorini is one of the island's most iconic sites. If you are a nature lover and looking to explore the natural wonders of Santorini, a visit to the volcano is a must. To explore the Santorini volcano, you can take a boat from the port of Fira or join an organized excursion such as a cruise to the volcanic islands and hot springs starting at €26. Upon arriving on the island of Nea Kameni, you will be able to see the craters and fumaroles that testify to the volcanic activity in the region.

Expect 20 to 30 minutes to reach the crater. I recommend setting aside half a day to explore the island. Good to know, you can swim in the waters of the island!

If you prefer to observe the volcano from the sea, you can opt for a sunset cruise around the volcano. This is an ideal option for those who prefer to enjoy the beauty of the island while relaxing on a boat. Additionally, some cruises include stops for swimming in the warm waters of the caldera, allowing you to combine a relaxing experience with discovery.

To discover all the beauty of Santorini, I highly recommend taking an excursion to explore the island from the sea. Boat tours allow you to see Santorini from a different angle, with spectacular views of the white cliffs and traditional houses.

I opted for an evening cruise to enjoy the sunset over the sea. These trips often include stops for swimming in secluded bays or discovering hidden sea caves accessible only by boat. You can also admire secluded beaches and picturesque fishing villages. Some tours also offer a visit to the Santorini volcano and its hot springs.

Finally, the sunset in Oia is a magical moment when you are in Santorini. The colors of the sky and sea blend together to create an absolutely breathtaking spectacle. Tourists flock to the terraces of the houses to admire the breathtaking view of the sun slowly sinking into the Aegean Sea. To enjoy it, plan to arrive early!

Another popular activity in Santorini is hiking. The island is full of hiking trails offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. A hike to the top of Profitis Ilias Mountain will give you a panoramic view of the entire island.

The hike from Fira to Oia is also a popular option, providing incredible views. The trail winds along the cliffs and offers stunning views of the caldera. During a 2 to 3-hour hike, you can admire the traditional villages of Santorini, the whitewashed churches, and the blue domes that are a distinctive feature of Cycladic architecture.

If you are passionate about history and archaeology, a visit to the ruins of Akrotiri is a must during your stay in Santorini. Located on the southwest coast of the island, this exceptional archaeological site contains the remnants of an ancient city dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C.

Since its discovery in 1967, Akrotiri has been considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean Sea. A visit to the Akrotiri site, available from €15, will allow you to step back in time and immerse yourself in the island's history

As you stroll through this site, you will have the opportunity to dive into the fascinating history of Santorini and discover the way of life of the ancient inhabitants who lived there thousands of years ago. You can admire the ruins of houses, paved streets, public squares, and much more.

To learn more, if you have the time, I recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum of Thera, which houses a rich collection of archaeological artifacts dating from the prehistoric era to the Roman period.

The displayed objects include ceramics, stone and bronze tools, terracotta figurines, as well as frescoes and wall paintings. The most impressive pieces in the museum are the frescoes from the Minoan period, which testify to the artistic richness of this ancient civilization.

Santorini is famous for its unique wines produced from grapes grown in extreme conditions. The island's vineyards are situated in fertile volcanic soil, giving a distinctive taste to the wines produced here.

After admiring the sunset in Oia, it's time to discover Santorini's nightlife! Whether you are looking for a romantic and peaceful ambiance or a festive night out, the island offers a wide range of places to enjoy yourselves

The main nightclubs are located in Fira, with music and cocktails to savor all night long. The local clubs offer a unique atmosphere, some with traditional Greek music or modern beats, catering to all tastes. Beaches are also great places to spend the evening, especially in Perissa and Kamari, where you will find many beach bars that will provide you with an electrifying evening overlooking the sea.

If you prefer a more peaceful evening, head to Oia, to Ammoudi Bay, to find waterfront restaurants serving local dishes. Stargazing from the island's secluded beaches can be a peaceful experience to end your evening. And if you are still awake after a long night, you can enjoy the sunrise by watching it from the Pyrgos Monastery!
