Universal Studios Orlando
Get ready to dive into the extraordinary world of Hollywood cinema! Attractions, live shows, stunning sets... Universal Studios in Orlando on the East Coast of the United States features several exceptional theme parks on a single site and offers unique and varied entertainment for the whole family. In this guide, I'll tell you everything you need to know about one of the most visited places in all of Florida: Universal Studios Orlando
The Three Parks of Universal Studios Orlando
Universal Orlando Resort is more than just a theme park; it is actually a collection of three different parks, including a water park.
Universal Studios Florida
Universal Studios Florida is the main and historic park, which first opened its doors in 1990 and competes with the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando. Here, you'll find exciting roller coasters and 3D and 4D attractions themed around the studio's biggest franchises like Shrek, Transformers, The Simpsons, The Mummy, and Men in Black. A whole section of the park is home to Diagon Alley, the famous shopping street from the Harry Potter universe
Islands of Adventure
Islands of Adventure is the second theme park, where you can find thrilling rides and scenic attractions based on franchises such as Marvel and its superheroes (Hulk, Spiderman...), King Kong, and Jurassic Park. This park also features an area dedicated to Harry Potter, the famous village of Hogsmeade.
Universal's Volcano Bay
Universal's Volcano Bay is the newest park. This water park features wave pools, water slides, and many more aquatic attractions set around a stunning landscape centered on an imposing volcano over 60 meters tall.
Universal CityWalk
In addition to these three theme parks, Universal Studios Orlando includes a large area where shops, hotels, a cinema, fast food, restaurants, cafes, and clubs are gathered. Its name? Universal CityWalk. Visitors pass through this area to access the different parks. It is accessible without a ticket, and attractions remain open until quite late in the evening.
Tickets for Visiting Universal Studios Orlando
Several options are offered to visitors:
Approximate prices are as follows (the exact price may vary by season):
- Single Park Tickets >, which allow access to one park for one day, for a period of 2 to 6 days
- Multi-Park Tickets >, which offer access to 2 parks or all 3 parks in the same day. These tickets also include a ticket for the Hogwarts Express, which connects the different parks.
The Universal Express Pass
In Universal Park, while you wait to access the attractions, you can often see exhibits related to each attraction, which is quite handy to pass the time. But there is a solution to enjoy express access, which can be particularly practical on very busy days: the Universal Express Pass.
With this, most attractions and shows are accessible without waiting. This ticket is not an entry ticket and must be purchased separately from the ticket allowing access to the parks. It comes in two versions:
The price of the Universal Express Pass is about $47, which you need to add to the entry ticket price. In my opinion, express access is a real plus any time of the year since attendance remains more or less high throughout the year.
- The Universal Express Pass, which allows you to skip the line once per attraction
- The Universal Express Unlimited Pass, which allows you to skip the line as often as you want
The Major Attractions of Universal Studios Orlando
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
There are two areas dedicated to the famous wizard from Hogwarts, one in the main park and the other in Islands of Adventure. Diagon Alley is located in Universal Studios park. Here, you can discover the Hogwarts Express at King's Cross Station (which will take you to the other area, Hogsmeade), the Knight Bus, Gringotts Bank, Ollivanders shop, and even the Leaky Cauldron where you can have lunch.
Several attractions based in the Harry Potter universe await you here, including Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts where you must escape from goblins, and two shows that bring the wizarding world to life: The Tales of Beedle the Bard and Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees.
Hogsmeade is found in Islands of Adventure. Here, you can visit the Three Broomsticks Inn and find several attractions:
- Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, stunning roller coasters that journey through the Forbidden Forest
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a unique scenic ride inside a replica of Hogwarts
- Flight of the Hippogriff, family-friendly roller coasters that soar over the Forbidden Forest
The World-Famous Studio Tour
This 45 to 60-minute studio tour is included with all admission tickets. You'll discover behind-the-scenes of the creation of major films and television shows, and if you're lucky, you might even meet stars like Jimmy Fallon, the famous host of The Tonight Show.
Production Central
An area that houses several movie sets and features many exciting attractions for both kids and adults:
- Transformers: The Ride-3D, to be immersed in the battle between two giant robots
- Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, impressive roller coasters that rise over 50 meters high and can reach speeds of 65 mph

New York
In this area themed after New York, several memorable attractions await you:

You can meet numerous characters like Doc from Back to the Future or Betty Boop in the Hollywood Character Zone, discover the world of movie makeup at the Horror Make-Up Show, and follow Jason Bourne in a breathtaking stunt show: The Bourne Spectacular.
San Francisco
Heading to San Francisco this time, to discover one of the park's most thrilling attractions, Fast & Furious: Supercharged. Based on the famous film franchise featuring Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, and Dwayne Johnson, this attraction combines special effects and sounds with 3D projections on one of the world's largest 360-degree screens, immersing spectators in a wild race.
World Expo
In this area themed around world expos, you can find Men in Black Alien Attack. In this interactive scenic ride, you take a seat in a car equipped with a laser gun to help the Men in Black defeat the extraterrestrial threat.
Springfield U.S.A
The most famous family in America is celebrated in this part of the park. In the recreated setting of Springfield, you can discover Moe's Tavern, a Duff beer brewery, and attractions like The Simpsons Ride, an interactive dome roller coaster experience that takes you on a humorous journey to Krustyland.
Woody Woodpecker's Kidzone
In this area designed for younger guests, there are no thrilling attractions. Here, children can experience attractions that spark their imagination and have unforgettable experiences like meeting Shrek and Donkey or SpongeBob SquarePants. The two main attractions are E.T. Adventure, an experience in the world of E.T. designed by Steven Spielberg himself, and Animal Actors, an animal show featuring birds and four-legged animals.
Marvel Super Hero Island
In this area, you can meet all the superheroes from the Marvel universe and find several particularly impressive attractions:
- The Incredible Hulk Coaster, some of the most impressive roller coasters in the park
- Doctor Doom's Fearfall, the latest invention of Doctor Doom, a ride that defies gravity
- The Amazing Adventure of Spider-Man, an interactive 3D scenic ride where Spider-Man battles supervillains from the Sinister Syndicate
Skull Island: Reign of Kong
This may be the most frightening area of Universal Studios. On this mysterious and wild island, visitors must brave countless dangers and cross the jungle while avoiding prehistoric creatures.
King Kong 360 3-D is an exceptionally intense interactive 3D experience created by Peter Jackson, where spectators are thrust into a fierce battle between King Kong and a towering T-Rex.
Jurassic Park
- Jurassic Park River Adventure, a river crossing through the prehistoric jungle
- Raptor Encounter, to come face to face with Blue and the other raptors from Jurassic World
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster, roller coasters racing through the jungle to avoid prehistoric predators
- Pteranodon Flyers, an attraction for the youngest that allows them to fly over the jungle in a gondola held by a flying reptile
Volcano Bay
The Volcano Bay water park recreates a volcanic island from the Pacific. It features around twenty water attractions spread across four different areas: The Volcano, Wave Village, River Village, and Rainforest Village.
Water roller coasters, a 40-meter drop, impressive slides, artificial beaches... there are attractions for all ages, making it the ideal spot to have fun and cool off on a hot day. You can even try your hand at surfing in a wave pool and go rafting in the turbulent waters of a stream.
Shops and Restaurants in Universal Studios Parks
In addition to all the attractions, each area has cafes, restaurants, and shops that are, of course, always themed.
Regarding cafes and restaurants, you can find:
Throughout the different areas of the park, especially in CityWalk, you can find souvenir shops (Universal Studios Store, Universal Legacy Store, Ollivanders...).
- A Starbucks and an Italian restaurant in New York
- A seafood restaurant in San Francisco
- A Krusty Burger and Moe's Tavern in Springfield
- The Captain America restaurant in the Marvel area
- The Leaky Cauldron in Hogsmeade...
How Long Does it Take to Visit Universal Studios Orlando?
If you want to fully explore the different parks, I recommend dedicating 3 or 4 days. Depending on attendance, visits are more or less smooth; Volcano Bay can, for example, be easily explored in half a day when crowds are not too high. In any case, you can already enjoy your visit by allocating one day for each park.
What Are the Opening Hours of Universal Studios Orlando?
Park opening hours vary depending on the day of the week and the seasons.
Generally:
In some cases, staying in a hotel allows access to the parks and certain attractions one hour before opening.
You can check the opening hours for a specific date by visiting the official Universal Studios Orlando website.
- Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure are open from 9 AM to 8 PM or 9 PM.
- Universal's Volcano Bay is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, 6 PM, or 7 PM
- CityWalk is accessible from 8 AM to midnight
What Is the Best Time to Visit Universal Studios Orlando?
The weather is generally pleasant year-round in Florida, although under this humid subtropical climate, rain is frequent.
Spring and summer are very good times to visit the parks. Temperatures are relatively high, and you'll appreciate the chance to cool off at the water park attractions. However, it's also when the rains are most frequent, and attendance is highest. Many American and international tourists flock to the parks. If you're concerned about the heat, avoid July and August.
Fall and winter are cooler periods, but it is rare for temperatures to drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, even in the coldest months (December and January). This season marks the dry season when rainfall is less, which is certainly a plus for visiting the various parks.
The best weather conditions are found in March, April, September, and October. However, late March is also when attendance peaks during Spring Break, which typically starts around March 20 and lasts for two weeks.
How to Get to Universal Studios Orlando?
Universal Studios Orlando is located just under 10 miles southwest of Orlando, and just over 12 miles west of Orlando Airport.
To reach it from the city, the quickest way is by car or taxi. The ride takes just a little over 10 minutes, and a taxi ride generally costs between $30 and $45.
You can also get there using municipal buses on lines 21 and 41, tickets costing about $2, but the journey takes approximately an hour.
From the airport, the trip takes about 25 minutes by car, but several other means also easily connect to the park: public bus, shared shuttle, or private shuttle.
For those visiting Walt Disney World during their stay in Orlando, services like Uber, Lyft, or private shuttles such as those from Mears Transportation also provide rides between Disney hotels and Universal Orlando.
Parking at Universal Studios Orlando
If you rent a car in Orlando and go to the park on your own, you'll need to pay an additional fee for parking. Prices start at $27 per day for standard spaces, which are a bit farther from the entrance, and closer spots cost up to $50 per day.
Those with an annual pass can park for free. Similarly, if you come in the evening just to enjoy CityWalk, catch a movie, or have a meal, you can generally park for free (except during Halloween season).
Where to Stay During Your Visit to Universal Studios Orlando?
The simplest solution is, of course, to stay right on-site in one of the many hotels in the park. The choice is quite vast, and while some are really expensive, you can also find much more affordable options. Additionally, they offer the advantage of allowing you to access the parks earlier in the morning, one hour before other visitors. You can find an overview of Universal hotels on the park's official site. The other solution is to stay outside the park, nearby, or even in the city of Orlando. Searching on a site like Booking.com, you can find a wide selection of hotels quite close, particularly in the city of Kissimmee or in the International Drive area, which are on the outskirts of the city near the theme parks. Here are two addresses I recommend for a stay in the theme park city, Orlando. These addresses are not exactly in the resort, but trust me, they often provide the most cost-effective solution.
- Home2 Suites By Hilton is located less than 2 km from Universal Studios Orlando. Thus, you can reach the park in about 20 minutes on foot. You can also drive, but it's quite expensive! This property has very cozy rooms, ideal for a good night's sleep after a long day of fun at the park. The hotel also features a pool. A night costs about $145.
- Wyndham Garden Orlando is the second accommodation I recommend, and it is also located less than 2 km from Universal Studios. The hotel also has an outdoor pool and a night starts at $125.
Preparing for Your Visit to Universal Studios in Florida
There is so much to do and see here that to make the most of your visit, you'll need to be a bit organized. Here are some tips to help you have the best experience possible:
- Start your visit as early as possible; ideally, arrive at the entrance at least twenty minutes before opening to minimize waiting time. Start with the most popular attractions (the Harry Potter areas) before they get crowded.
- Make sure to check a map of the different parks to plan your visit and avoid unnecessary backtracking.
- Book your tickets early; prices can change and tickets are never cheaper at the last minute.
- Download the Universal Studios app on iOS or Android. In addition to providing lots of information about the parks, it allows you to see real-time wait times and set alerts for show start times.
- Consider getting an Express Pass if you want to save time with line-skipping access.
- Avoid coming with a bulky backpack, although lockers are available for some attractions, they are small and only free for the first hour.
- Regardless of the season, the sun is often out in Florida, and even during the winter, it can be quite intense. I recommend always bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, and a baseball cap or hat.
- Also, remember to take a water bottle.
- You will likely spend a lot of time walking, so it's better to wear comfortable shoes.
