Best Things to Do:

Introduction

What activities to do during a trip to Cancun? If you're planning to visit Mexico soon, particularly the Yucatan Peninsula, you won't run out of places to discover! While Cancun is famous for its extravagant and lively nightlife, it remains a beach resort full of surprises... From visiting archaeological sites like Tulum and Chichén Itzá to exploring the most beautiful cenotes and Caribbean islands, as well as enjoying beautiful hikes in natural settings or scuba diving, your schedule is bound to be packed! Without further ado, here are the best activities to do in Cancun and all the places to explore nearby.

Why visit Cancun?

Located in the northeast of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancun is increasingly attracting vacationers looking to enjoy its paradise beaches and summer atmosphere in the resort town. The Caribbean Sea also offers excellent swimming conditions, ideal for diving, surfing, and other water activities.

But Cancun is also situated in an area with a fascinating historical past: between archaeological sites and museums, history and general culture enthusiasts will easily find things to do and see! In short, a stay in Cancun offers a wide range of activities to plan your trip

1. Discover the Chichén Itzá archaeological site

Located about 2.5 hours from Cancun, Chichén Itzá is a must-see archaeological site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features the pyramid of Kukulcán, the most famous due to its breathtaking architecture and astronomical alignments! During your visit to the archaeological site, you can also explore the Observatory, a ball court, and a sacred cenote that was once used for ancient rituals. A visit to Chichén Itzá is undoubtedly an activity to do while in Cancun, especially if you're passionate about Mayan culture!

I recommend visiting the site early in the morning to avoid the crowds or, even better, book a guided tour of Chichén Itzá to learn more about the history of this mythical place! Generally, excursions also include a stop at the cenotes with swimming included, so don't miss out The one I suggest below lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and is accessible from €22.

2. Dive at the Cancun Underwater Museum

The Cancun Underwater Museum, commonly known as MUSA, is located off the Caribbean coast and showcases over 500 sculptures submerged to promote coral reef growth This unique museum is only accessible by scuba diving, snorkeling, or aboard a glass-bottom boat if you're not comfortable diving under the water!

You will be amazed by these coral-covered artworks and the wide variety of colorful fish in this spectacular environment! Among the sculptures you will have the chance to see are The Silent Evolution, Man on Fire, and other creations ranging from a man watching television to fantastic creatures!

3. Swimming, relaxation, and sunbathing at Isla Mujeres

Located about 13 km from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a peaceful island renowned for its beautiful crystal-clear waters and relaxed atmosphere. If you're looking for a spot to spend some time in the sun, Playa Norte is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, especially for snorkeling! Also explore the southern part of the island to discover Punta Sur for its lookout offering spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

Isla Mujeres also offers activities such as visiting the sea turtle sanctuary! If you're in the mood for a soothing getaway on this paradise island, it's accessible by ferry from Puerto Juarez in Cancun, taking about 20 minutes for $14.50 one way.

To visit the island, I suggest this cruise to Isla Mujeres starting from €50 per person. You'll spend the day aboard a catamaran with an open bar and lunch included. The excursion also includes several stops for some snorkeling in the clear waters.

4. What to do in Cancun? Admire the beautiful ruins of Tulum!

Located about 1.5 hours from Cancun, the ruins of Tulum sit atop a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea. This breathtaking Mayan site boasts marvels such as the Temple of the Frescoes, richly decorated, and the Temple of the Descending God, one of the most famous!

Tulum is also popular for its paradise beaches. If you want to relax after your visit, or there are guided tours available to learn more about the history of this former port city in Mayan trade... For a complete and memorable experience, I recommend combining a visit to the Tulum ruins with a swimming session in a nearby cenote and a tour of the town of Tulum! This activity is accessible starting from €35.

5. Explore the Sian Ka'an Nature Reserve

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sian Ka'an is a 5,281 km² natural reserve that houses exceptional biodiversity. It's located about 2 hours from Cancun and is perfect for a guided excursion where you can enjoy a boat ride through lagoons to spot dolphins, turtles, manatees, and an impressive variety of tropical bird species. Expect to budget €196 for the day.

This natural paradise in the state of Quintana Roo is one of the most beautiful places to see near Cancun, so don't miss the opportunity to spend a day there!

6. What to do in Cancun? Snorkeling and diving in Cozumel

About a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen lies Cozumel! It must be said that it's a dream destination for those looking to snorkel and scuba dive in Mexico. This island, most of which is uninhabited, is home to some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the world, including the Palancar Reef and the Chankanaab eco-park marine reserve.

Many tourists come here to observe turtles, tropical fish, rays, and even reef sharks, whether they are beginners or experienced divers! If you haven't booked a rental car in Cancun, your best option is to join a day trip to Cozumel from Cancun! Expect to spend €112 for the 8-hour excursion.

7. Visit Cancun by going to Nichupté Lagoon

If you're not sure what to do in Cancun itself, I suggest exploring the resort town by taking a tour of Nichupté Lagoon. It's a network of mangroves and waterways that can be explored by boat or kayak, which is perfect for getting away from the tourist hustle and bustle of the center. The fare is €39 for 3 hours. You will undoubtedly be impressed by the lagoon's ecosystem, which is abundantly populated by crocodiles, birds, and fish!

For those looking for a bit more excitement, you can explore the Nichupté lagoon on a waverunner for €51 or on a speedboat for €60, allowing you to explore the jungle from the water at high speed!

8. What to do in Cancun? Enjoy the nightlife of the Hotel Zone

The hotel zone of Cancun is known to be the heartbeat of nightlife, and I must admit the energy and partying never diminish around here! It's a hotspot for partying until dawn and enjoying the best clubs like Coco Bongo, which features impressive shows with music, dance, and acrobatics! If you're looking for a different ambiance, Mandala is more upscale and festive, while Señor Frog's focuses more on live music and numerous interactive activities. Of course, there are also plenty of bars to sip on cocktails!

For those of you who want to have a memorable night out, I strongly recommend securing your spot for entry to Coco Bongo. While the prices are not cheap at €75 a ticket, the shows are truly worth it, and there is something for everyone!

9. Hiking in the jungle of Puerto Morelos

Located 30 minutes from Cancun, the Puerto Morelos National Park is perfect for those looking to hike during their stay in Mexico. This protected site is distinguished by its lush jungles filled with diverse flora and fauna including monkeys, tropical birds, and reptiles

Additionally, the reserve offers guided tours with detailed commentary about the local ecosystem and its importance on a larger scale, as well as adventurous zip-lining excursions to explore the jungle for €85. You can also experience the jungle on ATVs or by following trails to observe birds

10. What to do in Cancun? Swim in the cenotes of the Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya lies south of Cancun and is filled with cenotes, natural freshwater wells formed in limestone caves. These magical spots are often hidden in the jungle and thus perfect for a peaceful swim or snorkeling. Among those I recommend visiting are Cenote Dos Ojos, the most famous, and the open cenote Ik Kil, which is quite spectacular with its walls covered in vegetation and hanging vines!

If you cannot reach the cenotes by your own means, don't worry! There are many comprehensive excursions that include visits to archaeological sites like Chichen Itza! I have found one that could suit you, like this day excursion including the Maya ruins, cenotes, and a visit to Valladolid.

There is also another amazing site, Aktun Chen Park, located about 30 minutes from Cancun. This natural site, formed of caves and cenotes, is spectacular! It's another idea for a guided tour to do, as it features impressive stalactites and stalagmites! By the way, one of the main activities to do in Aktun Chen is zip-lining and rappelling in the Mayan jungle

11. Visit the Maya Museum of Cancun

The Cancun region is rich in history and boasts a very rich cultural heritage. The richest heritage in the area is, of course, the Mayan culture. That's why visiting the Maya Museum of Cancun can be a good activity during your stay. Built to mark the end of the Maya calendar on December 21, 2012, the museum houses a large collection of objects and works dating back to the Mayan period. It is also surrounded by about 40 Maya structures, including a pyramid.

12. The Xel-Ha Park

Xel-Ha Park is an aquatic park located less than 1.5 hours drive from Cancun. It's the perfect place for a family activity during your stay in Mexico. This park is highly focused on marine environment preservation and is heavily involved in ecotourism in Mexico.

On-site, you will find numerous aquatic activities for everyone's taste: snorkeling in the cove, swimming with dolphins or rays, children's playground... There's also a restaurant on-site and relaxation areas with hammocks and loungers. To access the park, I recommend booking your entry to Xel-Ha Park online for about €111 per person (it's a budget, but it's worth it!).

13. The Rio Secreto Reserve

To discover an unusual natural site with breathtaking scenery, head to Rio Secreto Park! Located about 1 hour's drive from Cancun towards Playa del Carmen, this site is a natural wonder of the region. You can visit an underground river and even swim under the stalactites!

The easiest way to access it is to join a guided tour. For that, I have found this excursion to Rio Secreto from Cancun. For €65 per person, you'll be picked up at your hotel in Cancun. Diving equipment will also be provided along with a wetsuit, life jacket, and a helmet with a light. A snack will even await you after this adventure!

14. The markets of Cancun

If you want to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of Cancun, there's nothing better than visiting the artisan markets. It's the perfect opportunity to shop and bring back souvenirs from your trip to Mexico!

Jewelry, clothing, or decorative items... you will find everything in the markets. You can also discover typical local specialties like tequila! The markets are often surrounded by typical restaurants where you can stop for a bite. I recommend Mercado 28, very artisanal, or Mercado 23, more food-oriented.

Be careful, vendors in the markets sometimes take advantage of tourists to sell their merchandise at very high prices or sometimes sell fake jewelry at exorbitant prices. Always be sure of your purchases, and if not, opt for window shopping instead

15. The Island of Holbox

Located about 1 hour from Cancun, Holbox is a small island that promises a paradisiacal escape with fine sandy beaches. Since it is a bit farther from the coast than Isla Mujeres, you will encounter far fewer tourists there.

It's an island with few inhabitants and abundant marine wildlife. For example, you may encounter whale sharks between mid-June and September or admire bioluminescent plankton at night.

16. The Xcaret Park

Located about 1 hour's drive from Cancun, Xcaret Park is an amusement park themed around Mexican and Mayan culture. You can spend the whole day enjoying the zoo, water activities, and shows featuring dancers and other performances.

The skip-the-line entry to Xcaret Park is available online for €122 per person. This will give you access to all the activities in the park as well as a meal if you opt for the Xcaret PLUS option.

17. Birdwatching at Rio Lagartos

The Rio Lagartos reserve, located about 3 hours from Cancun, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful regions of Yucatan in Mexico. This small fishing village is home to abundant wildlife, featuring a wide variety of birds.

The most famous specimens are the pink flamingos of Rio Lagartos that settle in the region between November and April. Other species are present in the reserve, such as crocodiles, pelicans, herons, and storks!

18. Surfing in Cancun

With its numerous beaches overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is a prime spot for surfing. It's especially perfect for beginners, with relatively calm and not too high waves. More experienced surfers can still find more challenging waves at certain beaches.

For beginners, I recommend joining a surf lesson near the hotel zone. You will be accompanied by an instructor from one of the most reputable schools in the area: the 360 Surf School. For this introductory session lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, expect to pay €75 per person.

19. The Isla Cantoy

Another must-see island to visit on a trip from Cancun is Isla Cantoy. Like Isla Mujeres, it is a perfect place for a relaxing day at the beach or a snorkeling session to admire the underwater life. It is home to a diverse wildlife, including 4 species of turtles (loggerhead turtle, green turtle, hawksbill turtle, and leatherback turtle).

To protect this exceptional environment, access to the island is highly regulated with a maximum number of visitors allowed per day. To be sure to include it in your itinerary, I recommend booking your tour in advance or checking with authorized organizations on-site.

20. Tasting Mexican specialties

To dive into Mexican culture, I recommend trying the local culinary specialties. Mexican cuisine, spicy and flavorful, will delight foodie travelers! Tacos, enchiladas, guacamole, ceviche... You'll have the opportunity to taste many dishes made with meat, fish, or even vegetarian options. For dessert, don't miss the famous churros or alegrías!

To discover the best spots in Cancun, don't miss this guided culinary tour that includes sampling 6 to 8 Mexican tacos along with a dessert. You will even have the chance to taste a local tequila! Expect to pay about €53 per person.

When to visit Cancun?

Now that you know everything there is to do in Cancun, you need to choose the best time to visit Mexico. The climate in the country is tropical with a dry season. This means the year is split into two, with a dry season from November to May and a wet season from June to October.

The ideal time to visit Cancun is during the dry season. Temperatures during this period hover around 30°C with warm and dry weather. Conditions are perfect for water activities and relaxation on the beach!

The rainy season is less enjoyable for visits. Although temperatures remain relatively warm, the rains and humidity can hinder some visits, especially since the risk of hurricanes is quite present during this period.

How to get to Cancun from the US?

Flying is of course the most obvious option to get to Cancun! From major cities like New York, you can find direct flights with airlines such as American Airlines and JetBlue connecting directly to Cancun International Airport. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to travel from the east coast. If you're departing from another city, you might have a layover in Dallas or Miami

If you opt for a layover flight, airlines like Southwest and Delta offer connections to Cancun. Ideally, depart from an airport with many direct flights and book as soon as possible

Where to stay in Cancun?

The ideal way to explore the city and enjoy excursions in the region is to spend a few days in Cancun. To help you find accommodation, I have a guide that gathers the best places to sleep in Cancun. Otherwise, here are two accommodations where you can settle in:

For a vacation by the water, you can book your stay at Beachscape Kin Ha Villas, which offers spacious rooms starting from €262 per night. You'll also have access to an outdoor pool, a wellness center, 2 restaurants, and a bar. The establishment also has free parking and direct access to the beach.

If you're looking for an affordable establishment in Cancun, Mezca Hotel offers nicely decorated rooms starting from about €93 per night. You can also enjoy the hotel's outdoor pool, restaurant, and bar. Free parking is available if you want to park your vehicle.

I've reached the end of this article on activities to do in Cancun! If you're interested in discovering Mexico, I have other articles that might answer your questions, especially if you're wondering what to do in Tulum or even where to sleep in Playa del Carmen
